Sharjah RTA Builds New Roads for Schools Ahead of Academic Year

Sharjah is preparing for the new academic year with a major upgrade to its road network. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has completed a package of road projects designed to serve schools and educational complexes across the emirate.
The completed projects cover more than six kilometres in total. They are part of Sharjah’s plan to improve road safety, ease traffic for parents and students, and support the growing education sector in the emirate.
Officials confirmed that all the new roads are ready before the start of the new school year. Thousands of students, teachers, and families will benefit from these projects daily.
Roads Built for Schools Across the Emirate
Education has always been a priority for Sharjah. Along with building schools and universities, the emirate is also investing in the infrastructure that supports them. Roads, access points, and traffic management are a big part of this effort.
According to Abdullah Ahmed Al Ali, Director of Road Maintenance at Sharjah’s RTA, several new road projects have been completed to connect schools and educational complexes in different areas of the emirate. These roads make travel safer and quicker, especially during busy school hours.
The projects include:
- Al Qalaa School in Hamriyah: A 2.4-kilometre road now connects directly to the school, cutting down travel time.
- Zayed Educational Complex in Muzairah: A new 1.4-kilometre road improves access for students and staff.
- Zayed Complex in Suhaila, Al Dhaid: A 1.5-kilometre road provides better links for thousands of students.
- Zayed Complex in Saf, Kalba: A 700-metre road ensures direct connectivity for families in nearby neighborhoods.
Each of these complexes will serve up to 2,500 students. The new access roads reduce pressure on older routes and help parents reach schools more comfortably.
University City Road Expansion Near Choueifat School
Another major project is currently under construction on University City Road, one of Sharjah’s busiest educational zones. This road connects Industrial Area 6 to Al Shahba and passes several schools and universities.
The work includes:
- Adding a third lane to reduce heavy traffic during peak school hours.
- Improving entrances and exits to make traffic movement smoother.
- Expanding parking areas to handle more school buses and private cars.
This upgrade will ease congestion for thousands of drivers daily. The project is scheduled for completion by August 24, just before schools reopen.
Smart Traffic Signals in Muwailih
Sharjah is also investing in smart traffic technology to improve safety and efficiency. At the roundabout next to the Quran Academy in Muwailih Commercial, the RTA has installed modern traffic signals linked to a central control room.
These smart systems monitor traffic in real time. They can adjust signal timings to reduce waiting times and prevent long queues. This ensures a safer environment for students and parents traveling through one of Sharjah’s busiest school areas.
This project highlights Sharjah’s move towards smart city solutions, combining infrastructure with technology to improve daily life.
Linking Roads to Etihad Rail Passenger Station
In addition to school-related projects, the RTA is also working on bigger transport upgrades. One of the most important is the development of roads around the Etihad Rail passenger station in Industrial Area 17.
This project is being developed in partnership with the Initiatives Implementation Authority. The goal is to connect the new rail station to Sharjah’s existing transport network, including school areas, residential communities, and industrial hubs.
When complete, the station will give families, students, and workers an easier way to travel between Sharjah and other emirates. It will also reduce pressure on roads by offering a modern public transport option.
Safety as a Top Priority
Every road project completed by Sharjah’s RTA has been built with safety in mind. Student safety is especially important because of the large number of young commuters using these roads.
The new roads include:
- Clearer road markings for better visibility.
- Improved lighting to make roads safer at night.
- Safer pedestrian crossings for students walking to school.
- Dedicated bus lanes and parking areas to avoid traffic jams.
These measures ensure that both school buses and private cars can move smoothly, while parents feel confident about their children’s daily journeys.
Sharjah’s Long-Term Vision for Education and Mobility
Sharjah is not only planning for today but also for the future. By building these roads, the emirate is creating long-term infrastructure that will support future schools, residential communities, and transport networks.
Sharjah is already known as an education hub in the UAE, with many universities, schools, and academies attracting students from across the region. With population growth and rising numbers of students each year, road and transport improvements are vital.
The RTA’s work ensures that Sharjah remains ready to meet these demands while keeping traffic safe, smooth, and reliable.
Why These Projects Matter for Families
For parents, these new road projects mean less stress in the mornings and afternoons. Faster travel, safer routes, and easier access to schools save time and reduce congestion.
For students, it means a safer and more reliable commute, whether by bus or private car. For teachers and staff, it creates a better environment to focus on education without worrying about traffic challenges.
Sharjah’s focus on building strong connections between homes, schools, and universities shows how infrastructure supports not just education but also the well-being of families.
