  • PublishedJune 12, 2025

Water is one of the most essential elements of life, yet millions across the globe face scarcity and contamination every day. Recognising this global challenge, the UAE, under the visionary leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, has taken proactive steps to encourage innovative solutions for clean water access. This commitment was recently highlighted in the fourth edition of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Water Award, an initiative supervised by the UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia).

The award ceremony, held in Dubai  and presided over by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum—Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai—celebrated technological breakthroughs that promise clean, safe water for underserved communities at low costs. The initiative embodies the UAE’s vision of philanthropy, innovation, and global solidarity.

Driving Innovation Through the Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Water Award

Established as part of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, the award encourages cutting-edge solutions to address water scarcity and contamination. In its fourth edition, twelve innovative projects were recognised for their potential and real-world impact. These winners were honoured for their role in developing and implementing cost-effective, efficient, and sustainable water purification and supply technologies.

The award offers three primary categories: the Innovative Projects Award, the Innovative Research and Development Award, and the Innovative Individual Award, covering both established entities and young researchers or inventors. The initiative ensures that a wide spectrum of contributors—from major research institutions to solo innovators—can be acknowledged and supported.

Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum expressed pride in the winners, affirming the award’s purpose as a beacon of hope and an invitation for institutions around the world to contribute actively. His words on the social platform X (formerly Twitter) reinforced the humanitarian essence of the initiative. He stated, “Our goal in launching this award is to stimulate and encourage innovation to address the problems of water scarcity and pollution in underprivileged communities.”

Highlighting Real Impact Through Innovation

The fourth edition celebrated 12 substantial innovations that bring transformative change to water-scarce areas. These projects were selected for their effectiveness in providing safe and clean water at minimal cost. Their implementation is set to positively affect the lives of thousands and potentially millions. Sheikh Mohammed congratulated the winners and encouraged other organisations in the water sector to leverage these innovations to improve their own efforts.

The awarded projects span a variety of methods, including solar-powered desalination systems, zero-energy water purification filters, and mobile atmospheric water generators. In remote or rural regions, these technologies offer alternatives to conventional infrastructure, bypassing the need for electricity grids or deep well drilling.

One award recipient developed a modular system capable of filtering up to 20,000 litres per day, powered entirely by solar panels, with minimal maintenance required. Another innovation utilises biomimicry, replicating natural condensation processes to capture drinkable water from humid air, ideal for arid climates.

The award also recognises water as one of the most noble forms of charity. Quoting the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Sheikh Mohammed remarked, “The best charity is providing water… and the best people are those who are most beneficial to others…” In this light, the innovations being honoured are seen not just as technical achievements, but as acts of enduring benevolence—an ongoing charity and a blessing that continues uninterrupted.

Suqia’s Role in Global Water Relief

The UAE Water Aid Foundation (Suqia) plays a pivotal role in implementing water-related philanthropic initiatives. Operating under the umbrella of the Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, Suqia has established itself as a leader in addressing global water challenges. According to Sheikh Mohammed, Suqia has successfully implemented more than 1,000 sustainable water projects across 37 countries. These projects have benefited over 15 million people, showcasing the scale and impact of UAE’s commitment to global humanitarian efforts.

This comprehensive effort includes drilling wells, installing water purification systems, constructing water distribution networks, and developing solar-powered desalination technologies. The result is not only improved access to clean water but also improved health, economic opportunities, and overall quality of life in the recipient communities.

Suqia also collaborates with international non-profits, local governments, and engineering firms to ensure sustainability. By applying rigorous assessment methods, they ensure that water projects align with environmental standards and local community needs.

In many regions, Suqia’s interventions have helped reduce disease outbreaks caused by contaminated water, increased school attendance by eliminating the need for children to fetch water daily, and empowered women through community-led water management programs.

Encouraging Global Participation and Knowledge Exchange

The Mohammed Bin Rashid Global Water Award serves as a platform not only for honouring innovation but also for fostering international collaboration. By recognising breakthrough projects, the award encourages knowledge-sharing and inspires governments, researchers, non-profits, and private companies to invest in sustainable water technologies.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed has consistently urged global institutions to leverage the work of award recipients. His invitation to utilise and benefit from these innovative water technologies opens the door for a more unified global response to one of humanity’s most pressing issues.

The award’s open application process is structured to attract applicants from a broad range of geographies and specialisations. Previous editions have seen participation from over 70 countries, creating an international pool of ideas and partnerships.

Workshops and knowledge exchange forums are held as part of the award’s implementation phase. These events provide technical insights, policy discussions, and collaborative opportunities, further enhancing the award’s real-world utility and encouraging cross-sector engagement.

Strategic Focus on Low-Cost, Scalable Solutions

A distinguishing feature of the recognised innovations is their ability to offer scalable, low-cost solutions. The challenge of water scarcity is often compounded by the high costs associated with treatment and distribution. However, the awarded projects exemplify how technology and humanitarianism can converge to deliver systems that are affordable, easy to deploy, and environmentally sustainable.

Many of these innovations include solar-powered desalination units, atmospheric water generators, and mobile purification systems capable of transforming brackish or contaminated water into potable sources. These systems are designed with the flexibility to be deployed in both urban and remote settings, enabling a wider reach and greater resilience in emergency contexts.

Some solutions leverage Internet of Things (IoT) devices to monitor water quality and equipment status in real time, minimising maintenance costs and enhancing transparency. Others are manufactured using 3D printing, allowing quick replication and local production, reducing reliance on imports.

This focus on affordability and adaptability ensures that vulnerable populations—such as refugees, those in conflict zones, or those affected by climate change—can access vital water services without delay or infrastructure dependency.

Sheikh Mohammed’s Humanitarian Legacy

The Global Water Award is part of a broader humanitarian vision led by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum. His leadership reflects an enduring commitment to alleviate suffering and build sustainable development pathways for vulnerable communities. By championing water accessibility, he is advancing not only a development goal but also fulfilling a fundamental human right.

Sheikh Mohammed’s statement, “Innovation in providing water is an ongoing charity… and a continuous, uninterrupted blessing,” encapsulates the moral and spiritual dimensions of the initiative. His belief in the power of innovation to serve humanity is the driving force behind Suqia and its success on the world stage.

Beyond water, his philanthropic efforts span education, health, economic empowerment, and disaster relief. The Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives collectively support more than 30 humanitarian and developmental organisations, amplifying the UAE’s impact across the globe.
