Abu Dhabi Secures Three-Year Celestyal Cruise Deal Through 2026

Abu Dhabi, known for its luxury hospitality and cultural experiences, has firmly positioned itself as a key player in the cruise industry. In a landmark move, cruise line Celestyal has signed a three-year agreement with the Department of Culture and Tourism – Abu Dhabi (DCT Abu Dhabi) to homeport in the UAE capital. This partnership, announced at the Seatrade Global conference in Miami, signifies a long-term commitment to the Arabian Gulf and highlights Abu Dhabi’s growing importance in global cruise itineraries.
The Agreement: Strengthening Cruise Tourism in the Gulf
Celestyal’s agreement with DCT Abu Dhabi is more than a simple scheduling update — it’s a strategic commitment to regional tourism. Under this three-year partnership, Celestyal will position Abu Dhabi as a winter home port, emphasizing the city as a key embarkation and stopover point in the Arabian Gulf. This marks a significant move for both the cruise company and the Emirate.
The agreement outlines plans for Celestyal to bring two ships — the Celestyal Journey and the newly refurbished Celestyal Discovery — to the region. These ships will operate multiple sailings during the Gulf’s winter cruise season, running from December to March each year. Notably, there will be three weekly calls to Abu Dhabi, reaffirming its importance on the itinerary map.
Expanding Itineraries: Iconic Arabia and Desert Days Cruises
In December, Celestyal returns to the Gulf with new energy and purpose. The 1,260-passenger Celestyal Journey will resume its ‘Desert Days’ cruise, a seven-night voyage that includes stops at iconic destinations such as Bahrain, Dubai, Khasab, Sir Bani Yas Island, and Abu Dhabi.
Adding to this, the refurbished 1,360-passenger Celestyal Discovery will begin operating from December 12, 2025. This vessel will make Abu Dhabi its official home port and will offer varied itineraries including three-, four-, and seven-night ‘Iconic Arabia’ cruises. These routes aim to cater to a diverse audience, from first-time cruisers seeking short getaways to seasoned travelers looking for a weeklong voyage through the Gulf.
Celestyal’s Vision: Bringing the Gulf to the World
Lee Haslett, Chief Commercial Officer at Celestyal, emphasized the cruise line’s excitement and confidence in this partnership. He described the three-year deal as a “privilege” and expressed gratitude for the ongoing support from DCT Abu Dhabi.
Haslett praised Abu Dhabi’s dynamic appeal as a travel destination, calling it both diverse and stunning. “We’re excited to not only homeport in Abu Dhabi but also include three weekly calls to the city throughout the winter season for the next three years,” he said.
His comments underscore a broader trend in the cruise industry — an increasing shift toward the Arabian Gulf as a reliable, scenic, and culturally rich cruising destination. Celestyal aims to offer guests an immersive experience, combining luxury with cultural authenticity, and sees the Gulf region as central to this mission.
Abu Dhabi’s Tourism Strategy and Celestyal’s Role
For Abu Dhabi, this agreement fits squarely into its tourism development strategy. By attracting internationally recognized cruise lines and increasing cruise passenger volumes, the Emirate is working to diversify its visitor base and drive economic growth.
DCT Abu Dhabi’s support is instrumental in enhancing the city’s cruise facilities, shore excursions, and overall visitor experience. Celestyal’s inclusion of nine specially curated shore excursions in Abu Dhabi reflects this shared commitment to quality and cultural engagement. These tours provide guests with the opportunity to experience the Emirate’s historic sites, luxurious malls, and desert landscapes — offering a well-rounded glimpse into Emirati life.
Why the Arabian Gulf Is Gaining Cruise Industry Attention
The Arabian Gulf is rapidly emerging as a favorite for winter cruising. With its warm weather, calm seas, and a blend of modernity and heritage, the region offers an ideal setting for cruise tourism. Ports in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, and Doha have invested heavily in infrastructure to cater to international cruise passengers.
Celestyal’s success in its first winter season in the Gulf only reinforces the region’s potential. As Haslett mentioned, the cruise industry in the Arabian Gulf is on track for record passenger growth in the coming years. By expanding its footprint now, Celestyal is positioning itself ahead of this curve, offering travelers new and memorable routes anchored in Arabian culture and hospitality.
A Promising Future for Cruise Tourism in the Gulf
Celestyal’s three-year commitment to Abu Dhabi is a powerful endorsement of the city’s cruise tourism capabilities. With two ships, multiple itineraries, and strong collaboration with local tourism authorities, the cruise line is setting the stage for sustained growth in the region.
For travelers, this means more choices, culturally rich experiences, and seamless travel options from a world-class destination. For Abu Dhabi, it’s a step forward in its goal to become a global tourism leader — not just in luxury and heritage, but now also in the world of ocean voyages.
Whether you are a seasoned cruiser or new to the high seas, the Arabian Gulf — with Abu Dhabi at its heart — is ready to welcome you aboard.
