Abu Dhabi Shaheen Make History with First EIHL Championship Victory
  • PublishedApril 18, 2025

The Abu Dhabi Shaheen Ice Hockey Team have carved their name in history by clinching their first-ever title in the Emirates Ice Hockey League (EIHL) for the 2024–2025 season. This championship triumph wasn’t just a victory for the team, but a monumental step forward for the sport in the UAE. Through determination, tactical discipline, and unity, Shaheen not only conquered the playoffs but also won hearts by setting an example of how to build a legacy from the ground up.

The journey to this historic milestone began with a strong regular-season performance. Shaheen dominated the league standings, finishing at the top with 45 points. This commanding performance established them as the team to beat and gave them the momentum needed for the high-pressure playoff games. The structure and strategy they displayed throughout the season laid the groundwork for a storybook run toward the championship.

Overcoming Whitebears in a Gritty Semifinal Series

The road to the EIHL title wasn’t easy, and the semifinal against Dubai’s Whitebears tested every ounce of Shaheen’s resolve. Played as a best-of-three series, it was a clash of styles and tempers. Each match saw edge-of-the-seat action, with both sides pushing their limits. The series concluded 2–1 in Shaheen’s favour, proving their grit and growth under pressure.

The decisive third game served as the launchpad for Shaheen’s final push. Their ability to adapt quickly, remain calm during tense moments, and stick to their game plan underlined the transformation the team had undergone during the season. The semifinal was also a confidence booster, particularly for the team’s younger roster members who had not tasted this level of intensity before.

Epic Finals: A Tale of Skill, Nerve, and Teamwork

The finals presented a thrilling all-Abu Dhabi showdown between Shaheen and the capital’s other elite team, the Storms. Game 1 turned out to be an instant classic. According to Hayez Al Moheirbi, Shaheen’s founder and a significant influencer in Emirati ice hockey, it was “one of the most thrilling and well-played matches in the history of Emirati ice hockey.”

The game pushed both teams to their limits and ended in a 2–2 tie in regulation time, leading to a 10-minute 3-on-3 overtime. With no goals scored in overtime, the game was ultimately decided by a nerve-wracking shootout. Thanks to heroic goaltending and composure under pressure, Shaheen emerged victorious. Team captain Aleksi Hirvonen played a pivotal role by scoring the game-tying goal, reinforcing his status as the emotional and strategic leader of the squad.

Clinching the Championship with a Masterclass Performance

Game 2 of the final series was a stark contrast to the tightly-contested first match. This time, Shaheen displayed complete control, superior execution, and seamless coordination. With sharp passes, strategic defensive positioning, and aggressive offense, they dismantled the Storms with a 7–3 win.

This emphatic victory highlighted everything the team had worked for throughout the year: unity, discipline, and growth. According to Hirvonen, this was their “best game of the season,” a perfect blend of individual brilliance and team cohesion. Every line delivered, every pass mattered, and every second was optimized. For Shaheen, this was more than a win—it was a statement.

Veteran Influence and Rising Stars Shape Team’s Legacy

The championship holds special meaning for team veterans like Vice Captain Milan Rabas and Captain Hirvonen. Having dedicated over a decade to the EIHL, these two stalwarts represent the perseverance and vision that drive success. Rabas reflected emotionally on the win, saying, “I always believed that one day I’d lift this cup.”

For the younger players, the win is both an achievement and a responsibility—to continue the momentum and build on the foundation laid by their mentors. The synergy between experienced players and emerging talent has become Shaheen’s most powerful asset.

Beyond talent and training, what sets Shaheen apart is their belief system—a belief in constant improvement, mental toughness, and team-first ethics. Their locker room is a reflection of mutual respect and shared goals, something every professional sports team aspires to cultivate.

Building a Culture: The Future of UAE Ice Hockey

While this victory is historic, Shaheen’s mission is only just beginning. The organization is now turning its focus toward nurturing junior talent, particularly among Emirati youth. This includes grassroots development programs, partnerships with schools, and collaborative efforts with local clubs to foster a thriving and sustainable ice hockey community in the UAE.

Captain Hirvonen emphasized the importance of building a hockey culture that lasts. “Our mission is to represent Abu Dhabi in regional and international tournaments and to foster a lasting ice hockey culture here in the UAE,” he said.

As ice hockey rinks and training facilities continue to rise in Dubai, the hope is that Abu Dhabi will follow suit. Increased infrastructure and investment will further solidify the sport’s presence in the country, ensuring that today’s achievements spark a new generation of players and fans.

A Championship That Transcends the Trophy

For Abu Dhabi Shaheen, this EIHL championship is more than just silverware. It’s a validation of years of hard work, a nod to their never-give-up attitude, and a declaration that UAE ice hockey is here to stay. With passionate leaders, a talented roster, and a visionary mission, Shaheen’s story is far from over. It’s the dawn of a new era for Emirati ice hockey—and a signal that the UAE is ready to make its mark on the international stage.
