ADNOC Secures Major LNG Deal with China to Strengthen Energy Ties
  • PublishedApril 22, 2025

In a significant development that strengthens energy ties between the UAE and China, the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc) has signed the largest liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply agreement between the two nations. The 15-year deal with a unit of ENN Natural Gas in China marks a major milestone for the UAE’s state-owned energy giant and underscores the growing economic cooperation between the UAE and the world’s second-largest economy. As global energy markets evolve, this contract solidifies both countries’ positions as key players in the LNG market, highlighting their shared commitment to energy security and sustainability

The Deal Details: Supply of One Million Tonnes of LNG Annually

Under the terms of the agreement, Adnoc will supply up to one million tonnes of LNG annually to ENN Natural Gas, a leading Chinese private energy company. This contract, which is expected to last for 15 years, is the largest LNG deal ever signed between the UAE and a Chinese entity, showcasing the strengthening of economic ties between the two nations. This partnership is not only a boon for Adnoc but also aligns with China’s growing energy needs as it seeks to diversify its energy sources amid rising domestic demand.

Strengthening UAE-China Economic Ties

The deal is part of a broader strategy by the UAE to deepen its economic relations with China, which has become an increasingly important partner in various sectors, including energy, trade, and investment. The signing of this agreement took place during a high-level visit to China by Dr. Sultan Al Jaber, the UAE’s Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology and the Managing Director and Group CEO of Adnoc. The visit was a testament to the UAE’s commitment to expanding its strategic energy partnerships and building on the momentum of its existing ties with China.

Expansion of Adnoc’s Presence in China

As part of its ongoing efforts to bolster relationships with its Chinese counterparts, Adnoc also announced the opening of a new sales and marketing office in Beijing. This new office is designed to enhance long-term business relationships and facilitate the growth of Adnoc’s presence in China’s energy market. Dr. Al Jaber emphasized that the opening of the office and the signing of LNG supply agreements are key steps in strengthening cooperation between the UAE and China, leading to new opportunities across the energy sector value chain.

Strategic Collaborations with Other Chinese Energy Companies

In addition to the deal with ENN Natural Gas, Adnoc has signed LNG supply agreements with two other major Chinese energy companies: CNOOC Gas and Power Group, and ZhenHua Oil. These agreements further reinforce Adnoc’s position in the global LNG market and highlight the UAE’s role as a reliable supplier of natural gas to China. The increasing demand for LNG in China, as the country seeks cleaner energy alternatives, has made the UAE an attractive partner for Chinese companies looking to secure reliable energy supplies.

China’s Growing Demand for LNG and Future Prospects

China is one of the world’s largest consumers of LNG, and the country’s demand for cleaner energy alternatives has been steadily increasing in recent years. The new agreements with Adnoc are a reflection of China’s ongoing efforts to diversify its LNG imports. Currently, Australia, Qatar, Russia, Malaysia, and the US are China’s largest LNG suppliers. However, as China continues to transition to a cleaner energy mix, the demand for LNG is expected to rise significantly, and partnerships with reliable suppliers like Adnoc will be crucial in meeting this growing demand.

The global LNG market is poised for significant growth in the coming years. According to Shell’s 2025 LNG Outlook, global demand for LNG is expected to increase by 60% by 2040, driven by economic growth in Asia, emissions reductions in industry and transport, and technological advancements. As a cleaner alternative to coal and crude oil, LNG is becoming an increasingly important part of the global energy mix, and the UAE, with its vast natural gas reserves, is well-positioned to meet this demand.
