  • PublishedJune 12, 2025

Sharjah, one of the United Arab Emirates’ most progressive and inclusive emirates, is set to host the 18th edition of Inclusion International’s World Congress. This groundbreaking event, taking place for the first time in the Middle East and North Africa, will be held from September 15 to 17, 2025, at Expo Centre Sharjah. It is being organized under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

Under the theme “We Are Inclusion,” the congress will bring together participants from more than 115 countries across five global regions. The event will serve as a collaborative platform to advance rights, self-advocacy, and policy improvements for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Spearheaded by the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services (SCHS) in partnership with Inclusion International and supported by the Sharjah Government Media Bureau, the event aims to generate transformative dialogue and action.

A Global Forum Comes to Sharjah for the First Time

Established in 1963, the World Congress is one of the most influential gatherings advocating for people with intellectual disabilities. Its 2025 edition in Sharjah is historic as it marks the congress’s debut in the MENA region. Attendees will include self-advocates, families, educators, healthcare professionals, social workers, policymakers, and global organizations committed to disability inclusion. Registration is now open, with early discounted rates available until June 16 through the official website of Inclusion International.

Sharjah’s Inclusive Reputation Supports Global Collaboration

Sharjah’s selection as host city was guided by its reputation for inclusive development, accessible infrastructure, and its commitment to the rights of people with disabilities. The emirate’s strategic position, coupled with its proven capacity to hold global-scale events, makes it an ideal setting for this congress. SCHS, a long-standing member of Inclusion International, has led many initiatives in support of intellectual disability rights.

Her Highness Sheikha Jameela Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Director General of SCHS, emphasized that this global congress reflects Sharjah’s dedication to enabling people with intellectual disabilities. She reiterated that Sharjah’s vision is centered on making inclusion a living reality—where all individuals can influence the systems and decisions that affect their lives.

A Model City for Accessibility and Social Inclusion

Sharjah has earned international acclaim as an “Accessible City for the Physically Disabled,” showcasing an environment tailored to the needs of all its residents. Its inclusive infrastructure encompasses barrier-free public areas, education systems, healthcare facilities, and accessible transportation—all aligned with global accessibility standards.

These inclusive elements are not merely symbolic but functionally embedded into everyday life. As such, the congress will allow visitors to observe and learn from Sharjah’s example of how urban environments can be transformed into inclusive spaces that welcome and empower all.

Congress to Address a Broad Spectrum of Key Issues

Spanning three days, the 2025 World Congress will delve into a wide range of significant themes including inclusive education, access to healthcare, employment opportunities, social and community support, legal rights, deinstitutionalisation, and organizational capacity building.

Through plenary sessions, expert panels, and interactive workshops, the congress will generate actionable insights and formulate policy recommendations. The event will ensure meaningful participation of self-advocates and allow them to lead discussions about their own futures and rights.

Inclusion International’s Ongoing Legacy of Advocacy

Since its establishment, Inclusion International has functioned as a global advocate for individuals with intellectual disabilities and their families. The World Congress is one of its most impactful tools for catalyzing change. As the world continues to confront inequality and inaccessibility, the congress serves as a vital call for collective action.

The participation of government officials, civil society leaders, researchers, and advocates will foster a diverse, dynamic dialogue. Sharing success stories and confronting common challenges will be essential to developing scalable solutions that can be adapted globally.

A Global Call for Engagement and Collaboration

SCHS and Inclusion International are inviting stakeholders from governments, education systems, healthcare sectors, NGOs, and the private sector to engage in this monumental event. The goal is to co-create inclusive societies where dignity, equality, and accessibility are not privileges but rights.

The congress offers more than just awareness; it provides a practical platform to develop and implement solutions that ensure equitable participation of people with intellectual disabilities in all spheres of life. The call is not just to witness change, but to drive it.

Sharjah’s Role as a Regional Advocate for Inclusion

Sharjah’s leadership in disability rights and inclusion has been both regional and impactful. Through sustained investments and progressive policy development, the emirate has built frameworks that support vulnerable communities. It has aligned itself with global goals while remaining deeply rooted in local contexts.

The emirate’s commitment to education, employment, and healthcare for individuals with intellectual disabilities is guided by a rights-based approach. The World Congress will further reinforce these foundations by introducing new models and fostering international collaboration.

Looking Ahead to a More Inclusive Global Future

The upcoming World Congress in Sharjah is more than just an event—it’s a collective pledge toward a more equitable world. Sharjah’s forward-looking policies and commitment to inclusion, combined with global participation, serve as a reminder that societal transformation is both possible and necessary.

The gathering will not only address pressing issues but also celebrate achievements, inspire innovation, and amplify unheard voices. As the world converges in Sharjah in September 2025, the message is clear: inclusion is essential, achievable, and must begin now.
