Turkey Unveils TALAY: Sea‑Skimming Defense Drone

Turkey has created a new type of drone called TALAY. Unlike regular drones that fly high in the sky, TALAY flies very close to the sea surface. This helps it avoid being seen by enemy radar. It can be used for many purposes, like spying, attacking targets, and patrolling the sea. This makes TALAY the world’s first ready-to-use sea-skimming drone.
The company behind TALAY, Solid Aero, is based in Ankara, Turkey. They designed this drone to be very quiet, fast, and hard to detect. It uses a special way of flying called the Wing-in-Ground (WIG) effect. This means the drone flies just above the water, using the air pressure to stay efficient and fast.
How TALAY Works and What Makes It Special
Most drones fly high where radar can easily spot them. But TALAY flies very low between just 30 centimeters to 100 meters above the water. This keeps it hidden under the radar’s view. Because of this, it can sneak into enemy areas without being noticed. It is perfect for quick attacks, spying missions, and defending coastal areas.
Even though TALAY is small, it carries important equipment. It has a wingspan just under 10 feet and is about 9 feet long. Despite its size, it can carry up to 66 pounds (30 kilograms) of sensors or weapons. These weapons are similar to small missiles used on ships.
Powered by an electric engine and special batteries, TALAY can fly up to 124 miles per hour (200 km/h). It can stay in the air for three hours and fly up to 124 miles (200 km). Its wings can fold, so it is easy to carry and launch quickly. The drone is built to be lightweight and stealthy so enemies cannot spot it until it is too late.
Many Uses for One Drone
TALAY can do many different jobs. It can attack ships from above, attack harbors, watch and report on enemy movements, and patrol the sea. It can also carry small cargo loads when needed.
The drone has smart AI (artificial intelligence) that helps it fly by itself or under control from a human operator. This AI also helps TALAY adjust when the sea is rough or conditions change, making missions safer and more reliable.
Inspired by History: The Caspian Sea Monster
The idea of flying just above the water is not new. In the 1960s, the Soviet Union made a huge flying ship called the Caspian Sea Monster. It was very big and could carry troops and missiles. It flew low over the Caspian Sea to avoid radar.
TALAY is like a smaller, modern version of this old idea. But instead of carrying people, TALAY is a drone. It is stealthy and designed for quick strikes and spying. Using drones like TALAY helps save lives and costs less than using big ships or planes.
How TALAY Can Change Naval Warfare
Though TALAY carries less weight than big missiles, it can still be very powerful. It can work in groups or swarms, where many drones attack together. This can confuse enemy defenses and make it hard for them to protect their ships.
Using many TALAY drones at once is cheaper and can be very effective against different types of enemy vessels like patrol boats and bigger warships.
TALAY was shown for the first time at a defense fair in Istanbul in 2025. It is ready for production and will start being made in October 2026. The Turkish Navy will get the first drones in early 2027.
How TALAY Stands Out Worldwide
Many countries are working on sea drones and Wing-in-Ground vehicles, but none are as ready as TALAY. The United States is developing a drone called Liberty Lifter for quick supply missions but it’s not fully ready yet.
China and Russia have ideas for sea drones, but they are mostly still in planning or testing stages. Iran has small coastal defense drones, but they are limited in power.
European countries like Germany and the UK have studied Wing-in-Ground vehicles mainly for rescue or transport, not for fighting. Australia is testing small drones for island supplies.
Turkey’s TALAY is unique because it is fully built, tested, and ready for action.
Smart AI Controls for Better Missions
TALAY’s advanced AI helps it fly smoothly and complete its missions well. It can fly alone without help or be controlled by people on the ground. The AI also helps TALAY handle rough seas and other problems, making sure it finishes missions safely.
This technology lowers the need for constant human control and makes the drone more useful in many situations.
Why TALAY Matters for the Middle East and UAE
The Middle East has many important coastlines and sea routes that need protection. The UAE and other countries want to keep their waters safe from threats like pirates, smugglers, and enemies.
TALAY’s stealth, speed, and smart technology make it a perfect tool for these countries. It can help keep important shipping lanes safe and protect coastal cities.
The UAE is already growing in drone and AI technology, so drones like TALAY could be a big help for their defense forces.
The Future of Sea Defense Is Here
Turkey’s TALAY drone brings a new way to protect seas and coastlines. Its low flight, stealth, and smart AI make it a strong and flexible weapon for modern navies.
With its small size but powerful features, TALAY offers a safer and cheaper way to do many sea missions. It is ready to change how countries defend their waters.
In the future, drones like TALAY could help Turkey, the UAE, and other nations secure their maritime borders more effectively.
