UAE Launches National Space Training to Empower Emirati Satellite Engineers

The United Arab Emirates has announced a major new step in building its space industry. The UAE Space Agency has launched a ten-week training programme designed to give Emiratis hands-on experience in designing space missions and working with satellite systems. The programme, called the Space Mission and Satellite Engineering (SMSE) and Satellite Engineering (SMSE) Programme, will run from 16 September to 20 November 2025.
This initiative is supported by the EDGE Group and its subsidiaries, BEACON RED and FADA. Only UAE nationals can apply, and the programme aims to train the next generation of engineers and space mission leaders.
A Strong Step Toward Self-Reliance in Space
The UAE has already made headlines with its space projects, including the Hope Probe to Mars and the Rashid lunar rover. These missions showed the world that the UAE is serious about space exploration. However, to continue this success, the country needs more local experts with the skills to design and manage space missions on their own.
The SMSE Programme helps fill this gap by moving beyond classroom education. It focuses on practical experience, allowing participants to work directly with mission design, system engineering, and satellite operations.
Real-World Learning for Future Engineers
Participants will attend training sessions in several locations, including the UAE Space Agency’s headquarters in Abu Dhabi, BEACON RED’s training centre, and FADA’s advanced aerospace facilities. The programme will combine in-person classes, lab work, online lessons, and visits to major aerospace and technology sites.
The training will cover space mission design, satellite system development, system testing, mission operations, and a central case project. This project will simulate a full satellite mission, guiding trainees from the planning stage to operations. By the end of the course, participants will understand every step needed to launch and run a space mission.
Who Can Join the Programme
This training is open only to UAE nationals. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in a STEM subject such as science, technology, engineering, or mathematics. They should already work in the space sector or plan to join it soon. The deadline to apply is 25 August 2025, so interested candidates must act quickly to secure their spot.
Strong Industry Support for Real Results
The programme is powered by the EDGE Group, one of the UAE’s top technology companies. BEACON RED will deliver training that mirrors real-world mission challenges. FADA will provide access to world-class facilities where participants can engage in real engineering tasks.
This partnership ensures the training is directly linked to industry needs, giving Emiratis the skills they need to succeed in the UAE’s growing space sector.
Supporting the UAE’s National Space Strategy
This training supports the UAE’s National Space Strategy 2030. The strategy focuses on building national talent that can carry out all parts of a space mission—from planning and design to launch and operations.
By creating a strong local workforce, the UAE aims to reduce reliance on foreign experts and build its position as a leader in space technology in the Middle East. This also helps young people see that careers in science and engineering are within reach.
A History of Building Local Space Talent
The National Space Academy has already launched several successful programmes. It began with a pilot course in 2023. Later, it introduced training on remote sensing and image analysis, followed by a course on applied satellite system design.
Each of these programmes helped Emiratis gain the skills needed for different parts of the space industry. The SMSE Programme builds on this foundation by offering more complete and advanced training.
Leading in the Regional Space Race
Countries across the Middle East, such as Saudi Arabia and Israel, are also investing in space. However, the UAE stands out for its focus on training its own people. Instead of relying on foreign talent, the UAE is creating a self-sufficient team of engineers and mission planners.
This approach also positions the UAE as a future knowledge-sharing leader in the region, capable of offering support and expertise to other nations.
Opportunities Beyond Borders
Graduates of the SMSE Programme will be ready to work on many exciting projects. They may support UAE-led space missions, join private companies working with satellites, or even take part in global missions with organisations such as NASA, the European Space Agency, or the Japanese Space Agency.
As the UAE plans new missions to asteroids, deep space, and advanced Earth observation, the demand for skilled talent will only increase. This programme gives Emiratis a real chance to be part of that future.
Inspiring the Next Generation
This training programme is not just about building skills it’s also about inspiring young people. The UAE’s space successes have already encouraged many students to consider careers in science and technology. The SMSE Programme shows them a clear path to follow and proves that these careers are real and possible.
By giving young Emiratis both inspiration and training, the UAE is building a future that reaches far beyond Earth.
Looking to the Stars
The SMSE Programme is a big step in the UAE’s space journey. It offers a powerful mix of education, experience, and real-world training. For those who join, it could be the start of a career that takes them from Abu Dhabi to outer space.
With strong leadership, top-level partners, and a clear vision, the UAE continues to show that the sky is just the beginning.
