This marks a significant achievement in the UAE’s space program, demonstrating its growing expertise in satellite technology and Earth observation.

Etihad-SAT is the second satellite launched by the UAE this year, following the deployment of MBZ-SAT on January 14, 2025. The satellite, which weighs approximately 220 kilograms, was developed by the Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) in partnership with South Korea’s Satrek Initiative. This collaboration combines the UAE’s ambitious vision with advanced SAR technology, equipping the satellite with the ability to capture high-resolution images of the Earth’s surface in all weather conditions and at any time of day.

 

A Technological Breakthrough for the UAE

Etihad-SAT represents a significant advancement in the UAE’s growing space capabilities. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR satellites like Etihad-SAT use radar signals to penetrate cloud cover, fog, and darkness, enabling uninterrupted imaging of the Earth’s surface. He highlighted that the satellite’s ability to operate in all weather conditions, including heavy storms and nighttime scenarios, makes it a valuable asset for disaster relief and climate monitoring efforts.

Salem AlMarri, Director General of MBRSC, emphasized the importance of the satellite’s capabilities, stating that Etihad-SAT will provide real-time Earth observation data, allowing scientists, researchers, and government agencies to make informed decisions in critical situations

 

Celebration Among UAE Astronauts

UAE astronauts celebrated the successful launch of Etihad-SAT, recognizing it as a significant milestone in the country’s space program. Hazzaa AlMansoori, the first Emirati astronaut, praised the MBRSC team and emphasized the satellite’s ability to provide continuous Earth observation data for scientific research and development. Sultan AlNeyadi, the first Arab astronaut to perform a spacewalk, highlighted Etihad-SAT’s contribution to global scientific advancements and its role in strengthening the UAE’s presence in space exploration.

Nora AlMatrooshi stressed the satellite’s importance in agriculture, disaster management, and maritime safety, noting its real-time data capabilities for informed decision-making. Mohammad AlMulla expressed pride in this achievement, describing Etihad-SAT as a key step toward future space missions and innovations, reinforcing the UAE’s commitment to technological progress and space leadership.
